WHAT A HOGA SESSION INCLUDES:

Breathwork and equine bodywork:

All HOGA sessions begin with an opening exercise of breathwork to help both horse and human get into a mindful, relaxed state. Riders then use a series of bodywork massages on the horses that loosen muscles and reduce tension. The horses love this part of the session, as they feel permission to be relaxed as they sense their riders letting go of anxiety and nervousness.

Standing stretches:

Riders begin a series of standing yoga stretches while standing alongside their horse. By placing their hands on their horse, the riders maintain energetic contact with the horses while loosening their own muscles.

Seated poses:

Riders mount their horses and go through a series of directed seated yoga poses. More flexible riders can also attempt more challenging yoga poses on the horse with the instructor nearby to hold a horse or assist the rider.

ABOUT ME:

As a life long horsewoman, I have always enjoyed deepening my bond with horses through shared experiences. Several years ago I began developing the idea of horseback yoga (HOGA) by combining my experiences as a yoga teacher and an amateur trick rider to give clients a fresh, new way to do something fun on horseback. I found that by combining the breathwork, relaxation and stretching I developed in my yoga practice with equine groundwork, I could create calmer, more enjoyable rides with my horse.

My confidence in myself and my horse also increased every time I attempted some of yoga’s more challenging poses horseback. I developed a passion for the fusion of yoga and horseback riding and sharing that experience with others.

The resulting HOGA classes have been very popular with all age groups (kids, adults, women’s groups, professionals looking for a team building exercise).

One of the best things about HOGA is that it is highly adaptable. Each session begins with breathwork and on-the-ground stretches. Classes progress to seated poses on the horse and eventually some of yoga’s more challenging poses. Students can also try some of the more challenging poses on a stationary barrel I provide before trying them horseback.

Through this progressive series, students can see how being in a relaxed state through breathing and stretching and allows their horse to experience a tranquil state. The result is a memorable experience for clients that also results in a calming class for our equine partners.
